After twenty years of service as an officer and attorney in the United States Coast Guard, Mike retired and entered private practice as a civil litigator in the Easton office of Miles & Stockbridge (Associate 1983-1986, Partner 1986-1994). On November 1, 1994, Mike struck out on his own, opening his own civil litigation firm in Easton. His daughter Melanie Jacobs Barney, having graduated from the University of Baltimore School of Law, joined him the following spring. They became partners in the renamed firm of Jacobs & Barney in June 1996 and have practiced together since that time.
